Episode 6-1
Simple Wired Gum Paste Flowers
Here’s another extended episode with several pieces to it! We’ll be making a simple tiered cake / simple wedding cake. This is to show you how easy it can be to make your own simple wedding cake – but keep in mind that I’m not trying to devalue my fellow pastry chefs wedding cakes! I’m just trying to show you that you can make your own tiered cake and save yourself some money if you’re just looking for something simple.
Sorry if this video is a little odd – My allergies were really bothering me and it was late at night but I really wanted to start off as soon as I could with this extended episode.
If you’re having trouble making your flowers look more open pay attention to wear you’re applying the gum paste glue. Paint 2/3 of the petal to have a more closed blossom and paint a “u” shaped stripe at the bottom of the petal to have a more open shaped blossom. As you make more and more simple roses you’ll get the hang of how to make them look the way you want.
As I made more and more of the roses I realized that putting the green floral tape, while a nice touch, was just more hassle that what it was worth. I had a lot of trouble keeping it from scrunching up when I was sticking it into the styrofoam. I think if I was creating a bouquet where the wires were exposed (like if they were just laying across the top as opposed to sticking inside the cake) then I would take the time to put the floral tape on.
Anyway, enjoy the videos – I hope they are helpful if even a little bit!
